I was so desperate to improve my looks, I even bought into those 'miracle' face cream scams they sell on the internet... and I'm a smart woman!

Let Me Tell You My Story

My name's Sarah Parker and I'm just an "average" woman.

I first started wearing makeup when I was 17 years old. I grew up most likely just like you... without an older sister to show me how to do my makeup and with a Mom that had no fashion sense or style at all.

I struggled trying to cover up my pimples, spots and blemishes... and when I did manage to succeed, it was so obvious it looked like I'd applied my makeup with a paintbrush!

Then in my twenties, I stopped going out to clubs with my friends, because I couldn't stop the makeup running down my face, and looking like a "Drag Queen".

Now I'm 39 years old. I work in a bank and I'm the mother of two children, a 6 year old boy, and an 8 year old daughter. Let me tell you about my usual morning makeup routine...

Imagine this, I'd wake up and look into the mirror to see myself looking pale and tired with puffy skin under my eyes.

"Dark rings under my eyes are just not attractive! Makes me look at least 5 years older than I am... I feel like I'm not making the most of what I have."

Then I'd look back into the mirror, and lean forward to get a closer look.

I can see large pore holes, and black heads... I just want to squeeze them and get rid of them, once and for all.

To make matters worse, I know I'll have finger nail marks on my skin and eventually I'll have a red blotch.

TEMPTATION is too much and I just squeeze one.

I think to myself, "Now I have to hide this. I stand back from the mirror and the red blotch gets larger and redder. Great! What was I thinking?"

Obviously I was TOO TIRED to think about what I was doing.

Now I have to cover this up.

"What do I have in my bathroom draw or my makeup case?"

I need concealer or foundation to cover this up. So I apply this over and over on the one spot until I can’t see any redness...

... but now I have a large bump. Oh, it’s a mess and I'm running out of time because I need to finish my make up and my hair before I go to work.

I wish I knew some way of hiding this self inflicted problem I have.

Now to my eyes.

I get even closer to the mirror to have a better look. I turn my head from side to side to get a better angle. Then I turn on another light in the bathroom to get even more light so I can take a closer look at how bad my dark rings are around my eyes.

I have never really been one to use a lot of make up but boy do I need some now.

And if that wasn't bad enough, certain times of the month I break out with pimples around my chin area. This is when I use extra foundation.

Sometimes it does look as though I'm covering up the pimple because I use so much foundation.

Now, I'm not sure why but over the last 6 months I've been breaking out in pimples on my chin area.

When it comes to applying my eye shadow, I never seem to get it right.

It doesn’t look even... and I always fiddle with the corners and end up applying more, when I probably don’t need it.

Mascara, well every time I apply it, I always smudge it... especially on my bottom eyelashes.

Why?

I don’t know. Probably a habit I've formed.

I've also completely stopped wearing blush as I feel I never brush it on the right part of my cheeks.

As I have little time in the mornings before I go to work or even in the mornings that I don’t work... but I need to take the kids to school... if I only had some quick simple techniques that I could learn to quickly transform my just out of bed look, I know I'd feel so much better.

But it didn't stop there, I began imagining how I would look as I matured and grew into my 40's and 50's, "surely all those current fashion and beauty trends wouldn't do me any good, after all... I'm married with children... so best to put them on the back-burner."

And finally I imagined myself in my 60's, "there's no hope for me now... I've been stuck in a makeup rut for 40 years, how can things possibly get better?"

I continued to get more self-conscious and that made me feel weak and pathetic. I would think, "If only I had more time... if only I weren't so unattractive... then I could be like one of those sexy women that I see in the magazines and at the gym."

As I already told you... I tried EVERYTHING. And all I managed to improve long-term was to lose a good measure of self-respect.

>> Mistake #1: Mismatched Foundation

Your foundation should not be a different color from the rest of your body.

Really... it shouldn’t.

This is an easy mistake to fix. March yourself down to the make up counter at your favorite department store and let the salesperson do her job.

It’s her job, after all. Don’t be intimidated, you don’t need to buy the whole product line.

It just makes so much sense...

>> Mistake #2: Blue Eye Shadow

This one really surprised me... because I was guilty of using it all the time.

Blue eye shadow works for some people. Little girls in dance recitals. Guests at 1970s-themed parties. Ethereal looking supermodels.

She said if you aren't one of the aforementioned people then don’t wear it.

Enough said...

>> Mistake #3: Dark Circles Under Eyes & Obvious Under Eye Concealer

This is a chicken or egg problem.

And yes, you’re right, the circles aren’t great. But neither are orange crescents under your eyes. Play around with a few shades of concealer to see what really works best for you.

Different products work differently on different people. Just because one brand works for your friend, doesn’t mean it’ll be flattering on you.

Make sure you’re getting enough sleep and talk to your doctor. Sometimes those circles are a sign of allergies or a vitamin deficiency.

>> Mistake #4: Obvious Lip Liner

This is definitely a look... It’s just not a flattering one for you.

Lip liner is intended to add dimension to thin or small lips, to lengthen the wear of your lip color and to prevent your lipstick from “bleeding” onto your face.

It is not intended to create a visible outline.

>> Mistake #5: Inferior Products In Your dressing Area

From one woman to another... most of us are not starlets with dressing rooms and make up artists at our disposal. But that doesn’t mean we don’t deserve to look like starlets with dressing rooms and make up artists.

Invest in good lighting around your vanity. Stock it with quality makeup brushes and limit your make-up collection to products you'll actually use. That way, your budget can be used to buy better cosmetics.
